MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- Berry will be the host for the 2007 Region XIII Cross Country Championship Meet on Saturday. The men's 8-kilometer race will begin at 9 a.m. followed by the women's 5K race at 10 a.m.
The meet will determine the two teams, one men's and one women's, that represent Region XIII in the NAIA National Championship Meet. In addition to the winning team advancing to the National Championship Meet, the top-five runners that are not members of the winning team will also advance to the NAIA National Championship Meet.
In addition to serving as the Region XIII Championship, the meet will also be the championship meet for both the Southern States Athletic Conference and the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Following the meet, the results will be split and the top SSAC teams and the top GCAC teams will be declared conference champions.
Coming into the meet Shorter is the top-seed in the men's draw. The Hawks feature the top-three runners in the region. Jared Carson is the top-seeded runner on the men's side, followed by his teammates Martin Hernandez and Jarad Godsave respectively.
On the women's side it is Lee that is seeded No. 1 coming into the race. The Lady Flames are led by the top-seeded runner Anne Houghton. Shorter's Magrina Chepkoech is the second-seed, while Berry's Rosalyn Huard is the No. 3-seed.
Berry, the three-time defending Region XIII champion on both the men's and women's side, is the No. 2-seed in both races. Lee is the No. 3-seed in the men's race, while Shorter is the third seed on the women's side. The top GCAC team for the men is No. 4-seed Xavier (La.), while Spring Hill is seeded fifth on the women's side.
Saturday will start with the men's race, followed by the women's race. The course if 99% grass with a small portion of asphalt running over a road. The top-five runners on each team will score, with the top-seven times being recorded for tie-breaking purposes.
