SSAC Policies and procedures

1. Bench requirements for home games: the home ATC is to provide at least water, cups, ice, biohazard and a blood spill kit on each bench. The blood spill kit is to include, but not limited to, assorted adhesive bandages, gauze, gloves, absorbent paper or cloth towels, and OSHA approved cleaning solution. You are not required to provide towels for the visiting team.

2. Travel requirements: when sending a team with or without an ATC each team should have a stocked kit, a travel letter with specific treatment instructions and an emergency contact sheet for each athlete with insurance information. We also ask that you provide exoclear or some type of ice wrap since this gets pretty expensive.

3. Communication: At least 1 day prior to away events call or e-mail the home ATC to give a brief description of how many athletes will be requiring treatment and taping. This will help us all to coordinate our own team's treatments so that everyone can get adequate treatment. Since most of us have limited staff we will assume that you will not be sending an ATC. However if you are sending someone please let the home ATC know so that they can plan treatments accordingly.

If there is an injury to a visiting athlete the home ATC should call or e-mail the injury information after the game.

4. Training room capabilities: Since our training rooms vary considerably in size and capabilities this will help each of us in telling our coaches what to expect when they travel to a particular site so that they can plan their pre-game activity accordingly.

5. Conference wide lightning policy:

Lightning Safety

The Southern States Athletic Conference requires that each SSAC school must have a lightning detector on site at all outdoor events. Athletic activities will be suspended when lightning is detected by a portable device within the second mileage range (typically 6-10 miles). Activity may be resumed 30 minutes after the LAST lightning strike. Each time lightning is observed or thunder is heard, the 30 minute clock should be reset.

When activity is suspended, it is necessary to direct athletes, coaches, spectators, etc. to safe shelter as quickly as possible. Each school should have its own protocol directing people to designated safe shelters. No one should leave the designated safe shelter until the 30 minutes has come to an end.

The athletic trainer--or if the athletic trainer is not present, the coach-- should be responsible for monitoring weather during athletic practices and games. During a practice, the athletic trainer should decide when to suspend activity. During a game, the athletic trainer should recommend to the game officials when play should be suspended.

6. Athletic Training conference commissioner term limits: At this time there is no time limit set for the conference commissioner position, but will be reevaluated and put up for vote on a year by year basis at the annual conference meeting or until the current commissioner actively steps down from the position.

7. AED Requirement: All athletic departments are required to have at least 1 A.E.D. for use by the athletic trainer at all home events and practices.
